What is the Human Papillomavirus (HPV) Vaccine?
The Human Papillomavirus (HPV) vaccines can help prevent cervical and other cancers, as well as genital warts in both women and men.
HPV infections occur through skin-to-skin contact, like during sexual activity. Most infections do not have any signs or symptoms.
There are many different strains of the HPV. The 2 most common cancer causing strains are strain 16 and 18, responsible for 70% of cervical cancers.
Who Should Get the HPV Vaccine?
HPV vaccine is recommended under the National Adult Immunization Schedule (NAIS) and National Childhood Immunisation Schedule (NCIS) for:
• Girls and boys aged 9-26 years for maximum efficacy, ideally before the onset of sexual activity.
• Adults aged 27-45 years can consider vaccination after consulting with a healthcare provider, especially if not previously vaccinated or exposed to HPV strains.
Males are also at risk of other cancers related to HPV infection and can receive HPV vaccination.
